Guide
Best eSIM for Austria: Vienna, the Alps and visiting family

In this article
Whether it's a city break in Vienna, a ski week in Tyrol or a summer with family in Graz or Linz, a travel eSIM gets you online in Austria from the moment you arrive. Install it at home, and your own SIM stays in the phone for calls.
If your SIM is from an EU country, your home plan may already cover Austria. Travellers from the Balkans, Turkey, Switzerland and the UK usually pay extra, and that's who this guide is for.
Your options for internet in Austria
| Option | Works when you arrive | Keep your number | Setup |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roaming on your home plan | Yes | Yes | None, but often costly outside the EU |
| Austrian SIM card | After you find a shop | No, new number | ID, a shop visit, and swapping SIMs |
| Free Wi-Fi | Cafés, hotels, some city squares | Yes | Logins and patchy signal |
| Travel eSIM | Yes | Yes, for WhatsApp and Viber | Two minutes at home |
Which networks does it use?
Our Austria plan connects to A1 and Drei (3), two of the country's three networks, with 5G where available. Austria has some of the best coverage in Europe: Vienna's U-Bahn has signal underground, and the main ski areas and Alpine valleys are well covered. High on the mountains and in remote side valleys, signal can drop on any network.
How much data do you need?
| Trip | Plan we'd pick |
|---|---|
| A weekend in Vienna or Salzburg | 1 GB for 7 days |
| A ski week | 3 GB for 15 days |
| Two weeks visiting family | 5 GB for 30 days |
| A month, with video calls and streaming | 10 GB for 30 days |
| Sharing with the family or working | 20 GB for 30 days |
Tips for Austria
Buy the motorway vignette online. Driving on Austrian motorways needs a vignette, and you can buy the digital one on your phone. Buy it in advance: online vignettes bought by private buyers only become valid after a waiting period.
Ski apps need data. Lift passes, piste maps and snow reports live in apps. In the cold, phone batteries drain faster too, so keep a power bank in your jacket.
Family visits mean shared data. At a relative's flat without Wi-Fi, one phone can share its data with the kids' tablets. Hotspot is allowed on every plan, with no daily cap.
Neighbours are close. Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Slovenia and Hungary are all a short drive away. The Austria plan works in Austria only; for a trip across borders, take a Europe plan instead.
Is your phone ready?
You need a phone that supports eSIM and isn't locked to your carrier. Here's how to check in two minutes.
How to set it up
- Buy the plan on our website or in the Blue eSIM app.
- Install it at home, on Wi-Fi. On recent iPhones the app installs it with one tap; on any phone you can scan the QR code.
- When you arrive, choose the eSIM for mobile data and switch on data roaming for it. Leave data roaming off on your home SIM.
- If you run low, top up the same eSIM in the app.
Driving in? The eSIM connects as soon as you cross the border, so set it up before you leave home.
What you get with Blue eSIM
- Two networks, A1 and Drei, with 5G where available
- Hotspot on every plan, with no daily cap

- Top-ups on the same eSIM
- Plans changed? Cancel any eSIM you haven't installed, for full credit, up to 5 months after buying
- An app and support in eight languages, including Albanian, Macedonian and Turkish
Frequently asked questions
What is the best eSIM for Austria?
One that uses more than one network, so you stay connected in the mountains. Ours connects to A1 and Drei, with 5G where available.
Does the eSIM work at ski resorts?
Yes. The main ski areas are well covered. Signal can drop high on the mountain or in remote valleys, as on any network.
I'm driving from the Balkans. Do I need one eSIM per country?
No. A Europe plan covers Austria and its neighbours, and our Balkans plan covers seven Balkan countries. Your phone can hold both.
