Italy eSIM guide: networks, coverage on the coast, and plan sizes

In this article
Italy has some of the best mobile coverage in southern Europe. Rome, Milan, Florence, Venice and Naples are covered end to end, and so are the main train lines and motorways. The gaps are in the places that make Italy beautiful: mountain villages, cliffs on the Amalfi Coast, and small islands.
Which networks does an Italy eSIM use?
Italy has four main networks: TIM, Vodafone, Wind Tre and Iliad. Our Italy plan connects to TIM, Wind Tre and Iliad, with 5G where it's available. Your phone picks the strongest one wherever you are, which helps a lot in the hills.
Coverage where you're going
| Where | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Cities | Strong 4G and 5G everywhere, old centres included |
| High-speed trains | Good on most Frecciarossa and Italo lines, short drops in tunnels |
| Amalfi Coast and Cinque Terre | Good in the towns, weaker on cliff paths and in some coves |
| Dolomites and the Alps | Fine in valleys and resorts, patchy on high trails |
| Sicily and Sardinia | Good in towns and on main roads, weaker inland |

How much data do you need?
| Trip | Plan we'd pick |
|---|---|
| A city break in Rome or Venice | 1 GB for 7 days, or 3 GB for 15 days |
| One week touring | 3 GB for 15 days |
| Two weeks, maps every day | 5 GB for 30 days |
| A month, or a laptop on your hotspot | 10 or 20 GB for 30 days |
When we last updated this guide (October 2026), 3 GB for 15 days cost €4.45 and 10 GB for 30 days cost €11.79. The live prices are at the end of this article.
Italy plan or Europe plan?
If you stay in Italy, take the Italy plan. If you also visit Switzerland, France or Austria, the Europe plan costs about the same for 10 GB and covers 34 countries. For a long stay with lots of data, the Italy plan is much cheaper: 50 GB for 30 days costs €23.99, against €68.49 on the Europe plan.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to show ID for an Italy eSIM?
No. Italian SIM cards bought in a shop need your passport and a tax code, but a travel eSIM bought abroad connects as a visitor, with nothing to register.
Does it work in San Marino and the Vatican?
The Vatican is inside Rome, so you're covered by Italian masts. San Marino has its own network, so connection there can depend on how close you are to Italian masts.
Can I use it as a hotspot?
Yes, with no daily limit.
