eSIM basics
Will I keep my WhatsApp number with a travel eSIM? Yes, here is how

In this article
Yes. Your WhatsApp stays on your own number when you use a travel eSIM. The eSIM only gives your phone internet. WhatsApp doesn't care which SIM the internet comes from, so your chats, groups and contacts stay exactly as they are.
This is the question we hear most from people travelling home for the summer, so here is how it works and the one mistake to avoid.
Why WhatsApp keeps your number
WhatsApp ties your account to your phone number once, when you first set it up. After that, it just needs an internet connection. Wi-Fi, your home SIM or a travel eSIM all work the same way.
So when you switch your mobile data to the travel eSIM, nothing changes in WhatsApp. People see your usual number, and your calls and messages arrive as normal.
The one mistake to avoid
Don't delete and reinstall WhatsApp while you are abroad. If you do, WhatsApp sends a code by SMS to your home number to verify you. If your home SIM can't receive texts abroad, you can get locked out until you're back.
Keep the app installed, and keep your home SIM in the phone. That's all.
Keep your home SIM in the phone, but switch its data off
Most phones today hold your home SIM and a travel eSIM at the same time. Set them up like this:
| Line | Switched on? | Used for | Data roaming |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home SIM | Yes | Calls and texts | Off |
| Travel eSIM | Yes | Mobile data | On |
Now WhatsApp, Instagram and maps use the cheap eSIM data, and your home number can still receive texts, such as bank codes.
Keep in mind that answering normal phone calls on your home SIM abroad can still cost you, depending on your home carrier. WhatsApp calls are free over the eSIM data, so ask family to call you on WhatsApp.
iMessage and FaceTime on iPhone
When you add an eSIM, your iPhone may ask which line to use for iMessage and FaceTime. Choose your home number. Then people reach you on the number they already know.
You can check it later in Settings > Messages > Send & Receive and Settings > FaceTime.
Can I use WhatsApp video calls on a travel eSIM?
Yes. Video calls use more data than messages, about 250 to 500 MB for a 30-minute call. If you plan to video call home every day, pick a bigger plan or use hotel Wi-Fi for long calls.

Frequently asked questions
Will my contacts see a new number?
No. A travel eSIM is data only and has no phone number of its own. Everyone still sees your usual number on WhatsApp.
Do I need to change anything in WhatsApp?
No. Just choose the travel eSIM for mobile data in your phone's settings. WhatsApp works the same as at home.
Can I receive bank codes by SMS while I travel?
Yes, if you keep your home SIM switched on. Turn off data roaming on it, but keep the line on so texts can arrive. Some home carriers charge for receiving texts abroad, so check with yours.
