Morocco eSIM guide: staying online on the summer trip home

Every summer, families drive down through Spain and take the ferry across, or fly into Casablanca, Marrakech, Tangier and Agadir. For many, Morocco means a month at home with family. And for many, it ends with a roaming bill, because Morocco is outside the EU and most European phone plans charge a lot there.

A Morocco eSIM bought before you leave avoids that. It works from the moment you arrive, and your own SIM stays in the phone for calls and texts.

Which network does it use?

Morocco has three mobile networks: Maroc Telecom, Orange and inwi. All three cover the cities and the main roads well.

Our Morocco plan runs on Orange Morocco, with 5G where it is available. Coverage is strong in Casablanca, Rabat, Marrakech, Tangier, Fes, Agadir and along the coast. In the mountains and the desert, signal gets patchy on every network.

How much data do you need?

TripPlan we'd pick
A week in Marrakech or a city break1 GB for 7 days, or 3 GB for 15 days
Two weeks touring the country5 GB for 30 days
A month at home with family10 GB for 30 days
A month, sharing with the family or working20 GB for 30 days

When we last updated this guide (October 2026), 3 GB for 15 days cost €5.45 and 10 GB for 30 days cost €12.99. The live prices are at the end of this article.

Driving down through Spain

If you drive from France or Belgium, you cross Spain before the ferry. EU phone plans usually work in Spain at home prices, so you may only need the eSIM once you land in Morocco. If your home SIM isn't from the EU, take a Europe plan for the drive as well. Your phone can hold both eSIMs.

Sharing with the family

Hotspot is allowed on our plans, with no daily limit. At the family house, one phone can share its data with cousins' tablets or a laptop. For people who go out on their own, one small plan each works better. Our family guide explains the options.

Before you leave

Install the eSIM at home, on Wi-Fi. The plan starts when it first connects in Morocco, so installing early costs you nothing. When you arrive, choose the eSIM for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it. Keep data roaming off on your home SIM.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to register the eSIM in Morocco?

No. A local Moroccan SIM card needs your passport details, but a travel eSIM bought abroad connects as a visitor, with nothing to register.

Will WhatsApp work?

Yes. WhatsApp messages and calls work over the eSIM's data, and you keep your usual number.

What if I run out of data at home?

Top up the same eSIM in the Blue eSIM app. Nothing new to install.
