Turkey eSIM guide: networks, plan sizes, and why it beats a Turkish SIM card

In this article
Turkey is one of the easiest countries to stay online in, and one of the hardest to do it cheaply with a local SIM card. An eSIM bought before you fly gets you online at the airport, with no shop, no passport copy and no phone registration.
Why not just buy a Turkish SIM card?
Turkey registers phones by their IMEI number. A foreign phone with a Turkish SIM works for a limited time, and after that you have to register it and pay a registration fee that runs into thousands of lira. Tourist SIM packages at the airport are also priced well above what locals pay.
An eSIM from abroad avoids all of that. Your phone roams on a Turkish network as a visitor, so there is nothing to register. Your home SIM stays in the phone for calls and texts.
Which network does a Turkey eSIM use?
Turkey has three mobile networks: Turkcell, Vodafone and Türk Telekom. All three cover Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir and the tourist coast well. Turkcell is generally seen as the strongest in remote rural areas.
Our Turkey plan runs on Vodafone Turkey, with 5G where it is available. Other providers use other networks: Airalo's Turkey page names Türk Telekom, and Holafly lists Turkcell and Türk Telekom. For a city break or a beach holiday, any of the three is fine. If you plan to drive through the far east of the country, coverage everywhere gets thinner, whoever you pick.
How much data do you need in Turkey?
| Trip | Plan we'd pick |
|---|---|
| A long weekend in Istanbul | 1 GB for 7 days, or 3 GB if you share photos a lot |
| One week on the coast | 3 GB for 15 days |
| Two weeks, with maps and video calls | 5 GB for 30 days |
| A month, or working from your laptop | 10 or 20 GB for 30 days |
When we last updated this guide (October 2026), 3 GB for 15 days costs €3.45 and 10 GB for 30 days costs €8.45. The live prices are at the end of this article.

Turkey plan or Europe plan?
If Turkey is your only stop, take the Turkey plan. It costs much less than the Europe plan for the same data. If you are combining Turkey with Greece, Bulgaria or a flight onward to the rest of Europe, the Europe plan covers Turkey too, so one eSIM does the whole trip.
Can I share the data with my family?
Yes. Hotspot is allowed, so one phone can share its data with a laptop or with the rest of the family. Just pick a plan big enough for everyone.
Before you fly
Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi. The plan only starts when it first connects to a network in Turkey. When you land, turn on the eSIM for mobile data and switch on data roaming for it. If something doesn't connect, restart the phone once. That fixes most first-connection problems.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to register my phone in Turkey if I use an eSIM?
No. The eSIM roams on a Turkish network as a foreign line, so the IMEI registration rules for Turkish SIM cards don't apply to a normal holiday.
Do apps like WhatsApp and Instagram work?
Yes. They work over the eSIM's data as they do at home.
Is there a phone number?
No. The plan is data only. Your own number stays active on your home SIM, if your home carrier allows roaming.
