Best eSIM for Dubai and the UAE: for a holiday or a stopover

In this article
Roaming in the UAE is expensive on most European and Balkan phone plans, because the Emirates are far outside any roaming deal. A travel eSIM installed before you fly gets you online as soon as you land at DXB or Abu Dhabi, whether you're staying a week or changing planes for a few hours.
Your options for internet in the UAE
| Option | Works when you land | Keep your number | Setup |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roaming on your home plan | Yes | Yes | None, but usually very costly |
| UAE tourist SIM | After the airport counter | No, new number | Passport, a queue, and swapping SIMs |
| Free Wi-Fi | Malls, the metro, hotels | Yes | Often asks for a phone number or a login |
| Travel eSIM | Yes | Yes, for WhatsApp messages | Two minutes at home |
Which network does it use?
Our UAE plan runs on du, one of the country's two networks, with 5G where available. du covers Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and the roads between them very well, including the metro. Out in the desert on a safari, signal comes and goes.
WhatsApp and FaceTime calls
This catches many visitors out. UAE networks restrict voice and video calls on WhatsApp, FaceTime and some other apps. Messages, photos and voice notes work normally.
If calls home matter, test a WhatsApp call when you land. If it doesn't connect, apps that are allowed in the UAE, such as Botim, Zoom and Microsoft Teams, work over the eSIM's data. A normal call from your home SIM works too, at your carrier's roaming price.
How much data do you need?
| Trip | Plan we'd pick |
|---|---|
| A stopover of a day or two | 1 GB for 7 days |
| A week in Dubai | 3 GB for 15 days |
| Two weeks, with lots of maps and taxis | 5 GB for 30 days |
| A month, or working from Dubai | 10 GB for 30 days |
| A long stay | 10 GB for 60 days |
Tips for Dubai and Abu Dhabi
Taxis and rides need data. Careem and Uber are how most visitors get around. Both work over the eSIM's data with your usual number.
Free Wi-Fi often wants a UAE number. Some mall and public networks send a code by text to a local number. With your own data, you skip that.
Combining with Umrah or Saudi Arabia? Many travellers fly through Dubai on the way to Makkah. Our Umrah and Hajj guide covers Saudi Arabia, and regional plans cover the UAE and Saudi Arabia with one eSIM.
Heat drains batteries. In summer, phones overheat and slow down outside. Keep yours in the shade and carry a power bank.
Is your phone ready?
You need a phone that supports eSIM and isn't locked to your carrier. Here's how to check in two minutes.
How to set it up
- Buy the plan on our website or in the Blue eSIM app.
- Install it at home, on Wi-Fi. On recent iPhones the app installs it with one tap; on any phone you can scan the QR code.
- When you land, choose the eSIM for mobile data and switch on data roaming for it. Turn data roaming off on your home SIM, or a few minutes of background data can cost more than the whole eSIM.
- If you run low, top up the same eSIM in the app.
On a stopover, the plan only starts when the eSIM connects in the UAE, so you can install it weeks before.
What you get with Blue eSIM
- du, one of the UAE's two networks, with 5G where available
- Hotspot on every plan, with no daily cap
- A plan that starts when you land
- Top-ups on the same eSIM
- Plans changed? Cancel any eSIM you haven't installed, for full credit, up to 5 months after buying
- An app and support in eight languages, including Albanian, Macedonian and Turkish
